The Henley Farrell Big Band was formed in March 1990 by Michelle Henley and Tony Farrell who were seeking an opportunity to further develop their love of big band music and trumpet playing. Michelle and Tony had met whilst playing in a local youth band and when big band leader Paul Du Cane was disbanding his group he kindly donated half of his music library to the pair who used this as a platform to start their own big band.
Rehearsal premises were found, musician friends were eager to play, new arrangements were added and PA equipment was acquired. Eventually a full big band complement was achieved and The Henley Farrell Big Band gave its first public appearance in 1991.
The line up of 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 5 Saxes, Piano, Bass, Drums, singers and optional Guitar is in keeping with the traditional bands from the swing era. The band now plays a wide range of music for all types of events including conferences, weddings, 40's theme nights, jazz concerts, Rat Pack nights etc. The band has appeared with some of UK's top musicians including Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams, Nathan Bray and has performed at many venues across the East Midlands and in recent years, as their fame has spread across the country.
The Henley Farrell Big Band is non-profit making and also supports local charities and worthwhile causes.
