History of Henley Farrell Big Band

The Henley Farrell Big Band was formed in March 1991 by Michelle Henley and Tony Farrell who were seeking an opportunity to further develop their love of the trumpet, having played in youth bands. At the time, a friend, who was also a local orchestra leader, was disbanding his group. So, with the kind donation of his ex-band’s music library and with lots of enthusiasm from Michelle and Tony, the Henley Farrell Big Band was born.

Rehearsal premises were found, musician friends were recruited and the Band grew in strength until a full Big Band complement was achieved. New musical arrangements were added, PA equipment was found and the Band made its first public appearance at the end of 1991.

Generally music is from the Big Band era – Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and vocal numbers from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Matt Munro, Ella Fitzgerald and Natalie Cole. We also feature music from all dance styles including favourites such as Jive, Ballroom, Sequence and Latin. Covering a wide repertoire, we play sounds from the magical 1940s to present day.

Our performances include appearances at venues across the East Midlands and further afield, including at some of the Country’s premier theatres. We have also played at many council organised events and festivals.

The Band is non-profit making and all monies received cover the cost of the expenses of the Band and its members. We are also committed to supporting local charities and worthwhile causes.

We welcome young musicians and equally benefit from the talents of some members who can recall those glory years when the Big Bands were in full flight!
Why not join us at one of our public events and enjoy a great night out.
